June 2018

Week Ending: 16.11.18

Whole School Attendance: 96.01%.

Dear Parents/Carers,

We started this term with our book week.  Children and staff engaged in various activities throughout the week promoting the huge benefits of reading.  An after school ‘bedtime story’ session went extremely well, with children returning in their pyjamas and listening to staff reading stories to them, followed by cocoa and marshmallows. The week culminated in a non-uniform day with the whole school community dressing up as their favourite book character.

On Friday 8th June Mrs Desai, Mrs Stenning, Mr Lewis, and I spent a wonderful day with Year 6 in Bewl Water.  The weather was beautiful and they all rose to the challenge of kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. My sincere thanks go to all the adult helpers for making this day possible.

Our second Fun Run took place on Sunday 10th June.  We were once again blessed with wonderful weather, the atmosphere was amazing and the whole event was a huge success.  Thank you to the PTA, particularly Sharon Messett, for organising such an amazing day. We do not have the final figure yet as we still have to pay some expenses and collect the sponsor money, but the preliminary figure looks around £2,450 which will all go towards developing the playground – thank you to everyone who took part.

As you will have seen, the playground is beginning to take shape thanks to the combined efforts of both the PTA and Mr Honey.  The ground work is now being completed and the boat is due to be built during the next couple of weeks.  Our aim is to get it all finished before Year 6 leave – fingers crossed!

On the 5th June Year 2 visited Smallhythe Place – Ellen Terry’s historic home – the trip was part of their Dungeons and Dragons topic, and a good time was had by all.

Arts fortnight began on 11th June – the whole school has been totally immersed in designing, creating and displaying artwork not only throughout the school, but also as part of our Tenterden Schools Trust community project, sowing and growing, where various pieces will be displayed throughout Tenterden Town during July.

On 11th June Year 3 had a visit from two people from the White Cliffs of Dover, who spent a very interactive time with the class teaching them all about rocks.

Our new Year R parents/carers were welcomed into the school community on Tuesday 12th June.  This was an informative event, which gave us all the opportunity to meet each other and chat over a cup of coffee.  They had the chance to meet the SLO (School Liaison Officer) and to purchase school uniform from the PTA.  Everyone was given an information pack to take home and digest.

This week on Tuesday the school held its open afternoon; I hope you all enjoyed the opportunity of seeing the amazing artwork, listening to the children singing and viewing the learning that has taken place this year.

Year 1 are going to Great Dixter on 25th June, please can you ensure that children have all the necessary clothing for either a wet or hot day.

The Year 6 performance is due to take place this Friday; the whole school will be walking down to The Sinden Theatre for a dress rehearsal during the afternoon and then Year 6 parents/carers are invited to the main performance at 5pm.

The Year 6 Safety in Action course will take place on Tuesday 26th June.  Please can parents/carers return the permission slip and payment by Friday 22nd June.

The school Dance Club assembly is on the 28th June 2018 at 2.40pm entrance for parents/carers is via the courtyard please.

Both our A and B netball teams have played magnificently in the Ashford Netball Youth League.  The presentation evening is on 3rd July – further details to follow.

This year Sports Day is on Thursday 12th July, if the weather is bad the reserve day is Monday 16th July.  As usual, this will be a whole day event; however it is having a re-vamp this year, so you can expect lots of new and exciting events.   Parents and carers are welcome to attend from 10.00 am and to bring a picnic along to share with their children at lunch time.  A letter giving further information will be sent out nearer the time.  Just a gentle reminder, that each child will need a t-shirt in their team colours, if you are unsure which team they are in, please talk to their class teacher.

Transition week is from Monday 2nd July until Friday 6th July.  During this time children will move up to their new classroom and meet their new teacher.  Those children that are going to Homewood, will transition to Year 7 at Homewood for the whole week.  Grammar schools offer a two day transition which occurs during this period.

Year 6 have their Leavers’ service on Friday 20th July at 1.30pm in church, refreshments will be served afterwards on the courtyard to give us all an opportunity to say goodbye.

Parents/carers/grandparents are warmly welcome to join us for our collective worship first thing on a Monday morning at 9.10am.  Parents can to drop their children off at school as soon as the gates are supervised and then wander up to the church for a cup of coffee and a biscuit prior to our arrival.  The planned dates are listed below.

To mark moving from EYFS to KS1, the children in our Reception class will be holding a special graduation service on Thursday 19th July at 2.30pm, all parents and carers are warmly invited to come along.  Year 2 will be holding their graduation service on Tuesday 17th July also at 2.30pm to mark their transition from KS1 to KS2, again all parents and carers are welcome to attend.

As you may be aware, the Tesco Direct website is folding – this is where parents currently purchase the embroidery service school uniform.  We have been in contact with Tesco, who have reassured us that this will not disrupt the ordering of uniform as they are planning to design a new website specifically for uniform.

Children break up on Friday 20th July.  The 23rd and 24th July are INSET days; therefore there will be no children in school.  School begins for children on Wednesday 29th August, 2018.

Wishing you all a relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday.

Kind regards,

Sara Williamson
