June/July 2017

Week Ending: 20/07/17

Whole School Attendance: 94.92%.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Mr Stanyon, Mr Lewis, Mrs Hamilton and I have just returned from spending a memorable week with Year 6 in Bewl Water.  The weather was not the greatest but they rose to the challenge of kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, canoeing and sailing in windy conditions and their teamwork strengthened throughout the week.   My sincere thanks go to all the adult helpers for making this trip possible.

Our first Fun Run took place on Sunday 11th June.  We were blessed with wonderful weather, the atmosphere was amazing and the whole event was a huge success.  Thank you to the PTA, particularly Sharon Messett, for organising such an amazing day. We do not have the final figure yet as we still have to pay some expenses and collect the sponsor money, but preliminary figure looks around £2,000 which will all go towards developing the playground.

On the 8th June Year 5 visited South Foreland Lighthouse – this was a free trip organised by The National Trust.  Although it was a very windy day, a good time was had by all.

Congratulations to all children in Year 5 who sang magnificently in the Lions choir competition held at St Mildred’s Church on Tuesday 13th June.  Seven schools took part and, although we didn’t win, their rendition of both ‘One Short Day’ and ‘Imagine’ was fabulous.

We are trying to achieve our national accreditation as a Sun Safe School – information has already been sent out and it has been lovely to see the children wearing their sun hats and applying their sun cream before playtimes.

Last Friday the School Liaison Officer came to monitor our attendance at the school.  Unfortunately she highlighted that illness is a concern and is impacting not only on our attendance percentage but also the children’s learning.  Since September 2016 until now there have been 1,299 session absent due to illness.  Whilst we appreciate those of you that continually work with the school to minimise absence, medical evidence is now required for those children that are repeatedly off sick.

On Tuesday 20th June at 2pm we will be welcoming our new Year R parents.  This will hopefully be a very informative event.  They will have the opportunity to meet with many representatives from outside agencies and to purchase school uniform.  Everyone will be given an information pack to take home and digest.

Year 6 will be going to the Rare Breeds Centre on 21st June for an interactive safety in action day.  This will help prepare them as they move onto secondary education.  Also on Wednesday, there is a 5-a side football tournament at Homewood for year 4 and 5 and a netball tournament at Tenterden the following week. In a couple of weekends time (8th July) there is an athletics competition.  Our netball team is playing its final few games in the league, where they are currently in second place!

Year 1 are going to Great Dixter on 28th June, please can you ensure that children have all the necessary clothing for either a wet or hot day.

Year 6 are currently studying World War II and are having a special World War 11 day on Thursday 13th July – more details to follow.

This year Sports Day is on Friday 14th July, if the weather is bad the reserve day is Monday 17th July.  As usual, this will be a whole day event with team games in the morning and traditional athletics during the afternoon – parents and carers are welcome to attend the whole day.  A letter giving further information will be sent out nearer the time.

Please note, there will be no school clubs from Monday 17th July onwards

A reminder for all Year 6 parents/carers that their performance is on Friday 30th June at 6pm in the Sinden Theatre, Transition week for all those going to Homewood commences Monday 3rd July and Thursday 20th July they have their Leavers’ service at 1.30pm in church, refreshments will be served afterwards on the courtyard.

Parents/carers/grandparents are warmly welcome to join us for our collective worship first thing on a Monday morning at 9.10am.  Parents can to drop their children off at school as soon as the gates are supervised and then wander up to the church for a cup of coffee and a biscuit prior to our arrival.  The planned dates are listed below.
